President’s Message for Mar-2025

Dear Esteemed Members,

As we journey through the golden years of our lives, maintaining an active lifestyle—both physically and mentally—is essential for our overall well-being. As senior citizens, we are not just spectators of life; we are active participants who can inspire the younger generation by demonstrating the countless benefits of staying engaged in body and mind. Here are certain ways to maintain an active lifestyle, you can always add a few more.

Regular Physical Activity. Regular physical activity helps prevent chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. Walking, yoga, stretching exercises, or even simple activities like gardening and dancing can keep us agile and independent for longer periods. Engaging in physical activity improves mobility, enhances strength and boosts energy levels, allowing us to enjoy life without unnecessary physical limitations. By demonstrating our commitment to staying fit, we send a strong message to younger generations that ageing does not mean slowing down—it means embracing life with vitality and enthusiasm.

Keeping the Mind Sharp. Just as physical exercise strengthens the body, mental exercises keep the brain sharp. Engaging in activities like reading, solving various puzzles (Sudoku & Mathdoku), playing chess, or even learning new skills such as digital literacy helps in maintaining cognitive function. Social interactions, discussions and participation in community activities prevent isolation and contribute to emotional well-being. An active mind not only enhances memory but also fosters creativity and curiosity, proving that learning and growth never stop, regardless of age.

Leading by Example. The best way to encourage others to stay active is to lead by example. By participating in fitness programs, volunteering, joining discussion forums, and contributing to social causes, we become role models for both our peers and younger generations. Our ability to embrace new experiences and maintain a positive attitude toward ageing inspires those around us to adopt a similar approach.

The Social and Emotional Benefits. Physical and mental activity also enhance our social well-being. Staying engaged in community events, forming friendships, and mentoring the youth create a sense of belonging and purpose. A lively and active senior community fosters happiness, reduces stress, and strengthens intergenerational bonds.

Let us take charge of our health and happiness by staying physically and mentally active. By doing so, we not only improve our quality of life but also become a beacon of inspiration for others. Ageing is not about retreating into solitude—it is about celebrating life, embracing opportunities, and demonstrating that the later years can be as enriching and fulfilling as any other phase of life.

Yours as Ever,

Brig JS Jagdev
