President’s Message for Aug-2025

Dear Esteemed Members,

As we begin another month on our journey together, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on a matter of great importance to us all: environmental stewardship. As senior citizens, we have had the privilege of witnessing the world change over the decades. We have seen the balance between nature and human life shift significantly with rapid urbanisation, technological progress, and environmental changes shaping our surroundings. While progress has brought convenience and innovation, it has also led to deforestation, pollution, climate change, and loss of biodiversity. Now, more than ever, we must ensure that future generations inherit a vibrant and sustainable planet.

Sharing Traditional Practices for Sustainability. Many of us grew up in an era when sustainability was not just a buzzword but a way of life. Our traditional practices naturally aligned with environmental preservation — reusing items, composting organic waste, conserving water and using biodegradable materials long before plastic became widespread. We must pass these time-tested practices to the younger generation. Simple habits, such as using cloth bags instead of plastic, repurposing household items, and embracing homegrown, chemical-free food, can make a significant difference in creating a healthier environment. Let us commit to passing on these valuable traditions to our families and communities.

Guiding Youth Towards Sustainable Living. The younger generation often looks up to us for wisdom and guidance. We must lead by example and encourage them to adopt sustainable habits in their daily lives. Traditional methods, such as rainwater harvesting, composting and reusing items, were second nature to us. By conserving water—such as turning off taps, reducing food waste, or segregating waste for proper disposal—our small actions can inspire others to follow suit.

Engage with Schools and Community Groups. We can also engage with schools and community groups to spread awareness about sustainable living. By involving children and young adults in eco-friendly initiatives such as tree-planting drives, waste management projects, and energy conservation campaigns, as well as promoting cleanliness drives within our neighbourhoods to maintain hygiene and reduce pollution, we can instil in them a sense of environmental responsibility.

These age-old practices serve as a reminder that modern conveniences should not come at the cost of ecological imbalance. As custodians of history and tradition, we have the power to teach younger generations how to appreciate and protect nature. Whether through storytelling, workshops, or simply demonstrating eco-conscious behaviour in our daily lives, we can leave a lasting impact.

Advocate for environmentally friendly policies at the local and government levels to promote meaningful change. Small initiatives, such as reducing paper use, lowering energy consumption, and supporting locally sustainable products, can collectively have a significant impact.

The time to act is now. As seniors, let us take the lead in fostering a culture of sustainability and responsibility. By setting an example and engaging in meaningful efforts, we can leave a legacy of environmental stewardship for future generations. Small actions, when undertaken collectively, can bring about remarkable change (The best example before us is of the Panchayat of Village Sarsini).

Together, we can ensure that the world remains a thriving and beautiful place for our children and grandchildren. Actions today will shape a better tomorrow. Let us step forward as the guardians of a sustainable future!

Yours as Ever,

Brig JS Jagdev
